St. Mary’s Kindergarten Curriculum

The
Kindergarten Religion curriculum focuses on various bible stories about God, our
Father and Jesus’ works on Earth. By hearing these stories, children will
become more and more aware of God’s love. We will learn basic prayers of our
Catholic faith and participate in prayers. Children will learn that God is
lovingly with us always and everywhere.
In
Language Arts, Reading and Phonics: strengthening letter and sound recognition,
and blending sounds together. We use the Saxon Phonics Program, which focuses on
the rules of learning phonics. It has proven to be a very strong program. We
will be working on the following phonological awareness strategies...
Letter
Naming Fluency - students name letters at a speedy pace
Onset Recognition -
students can say the beginning sound of a word
Phonemic Segmentation Fluency - students can break apart the sounds of a
word
Nonsense Word Fluency - students can blend sounds to make words
Through
shared reading and morning message, children will be engaged in an interactive
process used with the whole class. As the teacher reads a story or writes the
message, children join in on phrases or words that they know and identify
various skills of language arts. During subsequent re-readings, children read
more and more of the text, until they are able to read the story independently.
Shared reading and morning message is an opportunity to model conventions of
print and the use of reading strategies.
In
literacy centers: children will practice reading and writing skills, while other
children will be working in small guided reading groups. The center activities
are designed to strengthen letter/sound knowledge, listening skills, oral
language expression, rhyme, letter formation and cooperation.

In
Mathematics: curriculum provides students with mathematical experiences that
help them develop number sense and a positive attitude towards mathematics that
will continue through their school career and their lives.

In
Science: we work on developing an awareness of the world in which we live.
Through scientific inquiry, concepts will be presented in the life and earth
sciences, including the study of animals and plants, the five senses and general
health, and the four seasons.
In
Social Studies: we focus on the students and how they relate to others in their
families, classroom, school, and community. Activities will help the children
focus their natural curiosity for the world around them.
